Question: How To Make A Draw Knife?

What can I use instead of a draw knife?

I have a Fiskars hatchet that I use as my draw knife. I use it the way most here would use their fixed blade knives but the handle and large head of a hatchet make removing wood a two handed operation which is nice–I have more control and it’s easier to draw along the full length of a bow limb.

What are draw knives used for?

A drawknife ( drawing knife, draw shave, shaving knife ) is a traditional woodworking hand tool used to shape wood by removing shavings. It consists of a blade with a handle at each end. The blade is much longer (along the cutting edge) than it is deep (from cutting edge to back edge).

Do saw blades make good knives?

Old saw blades are almost always made from high quality steel. The blade is already the right hardness for holding an edge, so you don’t need to treat the steel to make it a good knife. However, blanks cut from the saw are sometimes a little too flexible, but you can work around (or with) it.

Do I need a draw knife?

A drawknife removes a lot of wood quickly with little finesse, so unless you prefer handwork for roughing out workpieces, you may not find much use for a drawknife. Unlike a drawknife, you can push or pull a spokeshave, depending on grain direction and the most comfortable working position.
